For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence Proverbs 3:32
The more that I study the bible, the more I appreciate the “wisdom” books, especially Proverbs.
Proverbs is full of quick verses about how the Lord blesses and favors the righteous, blameless and upright, so it makes sense that we also learn about #HolyConfidence.
I haven’t done this in awhile, but I think it will be helpful for this verse, to pull three other different versions to compare the wording.
ESV: for the devious person is an abomination to the LORD, but the upright are in his confidence
NLT: Such wicked people are detestable to the LORD, but he offers his friendship to the godly.
GNT: because the LORD hates people who do evil, but he takes righteous people into his confidence.
Perfect, Now let’s pull the greek words for:
perverse– “luz” meaning depart, deviate
detests– “toebah” the other words used here are abomination, detestable (this is strong language)
Nerd Alert: this might be akin to not being able to say, “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” in the Harry Potter series (any other HP fans?!)
upright- “yashar” meaning that which is straight and right
confidence- “sod” meaning counsel, friendship, intimate, secret.
We have been talking about confidence as being led by the Holy Spirit, but how does that translate in this verse?
Have you every shared a secret with someone that was just between the two of you?
It was something that perhaps the two of you knew, and could exchange glances across a room and be able to put together what the other person might say.
How about who are you telling your secrets to, are you sharing your secrets with your neighbor, a stranger you husband or wife?
Typically we share our secrets with people that we are in a close or intimate relationship with. These people know us better than most other people and they have this deeper understanding of who we are.
We trust them so they share with us. This confidence is reciprocated as an outpouring of love and trust for the other person.
Who says that our relationship with God isn’t the same way?
We often think of our relationship with God as us putting our trust and hope and confidence in Him, but how about Him putting His trust, hope, confidence in us?
read the last part of the verse: into his confidence
We put our confidence in Him, but this verse also clearly states that He put us into his confidence.
This means that we get to have that personal intimate relationship with Him, full of inside jokes, and special words that only the two of you understand.
Friends, God tells us secrets, He whispers His promises and His mysteries to us.
He loves us.
He trusts us.
He knows that through Him we can (and will) accomplish His purposes for our lives.
There have been times in my life where God has shared something with me and also has told me to NOT tell anyone…..yet.
In 2016 after I become a certified Christian Life Coach, I was introduced to a writing and speaking conference by a friend of a friend.
I remember it like yesterday, I was driving home, a few days away from the conference and suddenly I got this super clear vision.
It was something that I treasured so much. Confirmation that what I was doing what not in vain and He would reward and bless my obedience and willingness to step out in faith.
With my first book being just a few short months from being released, it brings me back to that moment in my car when I had that vision.
God honored the confidence that I placed in Him, but placing His confidence in me.
In what ways has God put His confidence in you?
I can’t believe I almost forgot to mention this, but I’m going to starting to do weekly facebook live videos every Sunday, just doing a quick recap and discussion on some key take-aways from the #HolyConfidence posts for that week. I plan on going live Sunday 8:00 AM MST just to casually talk about the verses and applying this idea of #HolyConfidence to our lives, so if you’re free I would love for you to join me! My instagram link is www.instagram.com/stephaniemillercoach (and if you can’t catch it live and be part of the discussion no worries it will stay up on the page so you can check it out at your convenience!)
