Savior Series

I Will Yet Praise Him

Today I had a different verse in mind to look at, but instead God has put Psalm 42 on my heart. We see that the word “Savior” is said more than once, so we will discuss each instance of the use of the word and the psalm in its entirety.

As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
    When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
    under the protection of the Mighty One[d]
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
    at night his song is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony
    as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

It’s very evident that David’s life wasn’t all smooth sailing, in this Psalm he says some serious deep and depressing things.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?

My bones suffer mortal agony
    as my foes taunt me,

He even questions where God is and why He has forgotten him.

 I say to God my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?”

Here is my question, have you every been there? To the point of sadness and despair where it seems like hopelessness is the next step because you can’t feel God and you can’t “shake off” the feeling of despair that is overwhelming you?

I have.

Let me just tell you it’s not a fun place to be, it’s a lonely place to be. It’s when you have to force yourself to get up and get moving and face the day. And that’s exactly what it feels like, facing the day, like you are setting yourself up for a monumental event that is going to exhaust you.

In these times we may not feel like God is good, especially if we can’t feel him at all, but we need to remind ourselves that He is.

David does more than remind himself of his hope in his Savior, he PRAISES his Savior.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

He doesn’t just praise God once. He praises God more than once, and in more than just “I will yet praise Him.” If we look at all the ways he praises God is it also through the words, “Mighty One” and “My Rock”, we see that calling out the names of God or attributes of God is praise because it is placing God where He belongs.

Our praise to God is a posture of heart. It is an both an outward exclamation and inward acknowledgement. It seems to me that David doesn’t feel God in that very moment, but knows He is there and is praising Him even though he can’t see past his feelings.

I’ve shared before a time in my life where God didn’t feel good and to praise Him was the hardest thing I had to do in the midst of pain and suffering.

But it was the best thing I could have ever done.

Action Point:

We’ve all been in these downcast points before, and maybe you’re even there now. If this is you, please know that you are not alone. I encourage you to think about the ways you can praise God during this time, maybe even just meditate the word “Savior” and what that means to you.

Bonus- Visual imagery always helps me, so if you can imagine yourself physically placing your hope and trust in God I would recommend that. (It might look different for everyone).

Additional Scriptures:

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore. Psalm 121
