Savior Series

A Savior And Defender

It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them. Isaiah 19:20

Our #saviorseries post for today is from the book of  Isaiah looking at a prophecy against Egypt.

In the verses leading up to this one, it is talking about the destruction and division that is to come to Egypt, until we get to verse 18, where something else happens.

18 In that day five cities in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.[a]

19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt, and a monument to the Lord at its border.

They speak their allegiance to the Lord, and begin to take action proclaiming Him as Lord, including building an alter to worship Him.

verse 20 (today’s verse is God’s response)

It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them. Isaiah 19:20

It seems to me that Egypt had to reach the end of their rope before they turned to God. They had to endure alot of pain and hardship before they reached this point, but once they submit to the Lord He promises to send a savior and rescue them.

This is how our salvation works, we only receive our savior once we “reach the end of  our rope” and submit to needing a savior.

You can’t be saved if you don’t realize you need saving.

In addition to sending a savior, God also says he will send a defender, so why do we need both a savior and defender? Why do we need saving AND defending?

Defending in this verse actually means, ” much, many, or great”. So this means that God is sending THE GREAT savior to rescue them.

God sent THE GREAT savior to rescue us.

“The text says the Savior is a great one. Oh! I wanted a great Savior. A little Savior would not have answered my turn, for great sin wanted a great atonement, and my hard heart wanted great grace to soften it down.” (Spurgeon)

Verses 21-22 further show God’s grace and mercy to Egypt once they turn to Him.

21 So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge the Lord. They will worship with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them. 22 The Lord will strike Egypt with a plague; he will strike them and heal them. They will turn to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal them.

Action Points:

How should this mirror our response to what is going on in the world today?

How can you actively look to Jesus as THE GREAT savior/defender/rescuer in your life today?

Additional Scripture:

Psalm 18

So for tomorrow I’m going to do something a little different, For each Sunday of the Month I’m going to post song lyrics to songs that refer to Jesus as Savior! My hope is that by reading these lyrics (in addition to listening to the song) you will be able to let the promise of Jesus wash over you!
