31 Days of Standing Firm

Stand Firm and Win Life

design (51)

19 Stand firm, and you will win life. Luke 21:19

So when I first read this verse I read it as,” stand firm and you win at life” I thought to myself what is a very common social expression doing in the bible? (As many people often refer to their activities or lives as #winning.)

But incorrectly reading this verse leads to an incorrect interpretation. If you read it as I did above, it sparks the notion of life is a game and a competition.

Do what you need to in order to get ahead and stay ahead

Stand firm and you will win at life.

Thank goodness that is not what the verse says!

You don’t have to do anything in order to win at life, Jesus has already given you life.

I am the way and the truth and the life and no one comes to the father except through me. John 14:6

19 Stand firm, and you will win life. Luke 21:19

Oh but friends our life here on earth is not our final destination. I was reminded this past weekend that this earth is not our home, and we are merely just messengers sent to complete the mission God has give us.

Remembering that this world is not our home reminds us of where our true home is, especially in light of all of the tragedies lately including but not limited to the Pittsburgh shooting.

As our heart breaks for the people affected by this senseless act of violence (and really all senseless acts of violence) it is easy to start to give into the fear that may pop up in our minds.

No where is safe.

How can I raise my child in this world we are living in

I’m afraid to go out places

These can be some of the things we start to tell ourselves as a result of these tragedies.

And when we start to give into these feelings of fear and let it dictate our lives, it is then we have a problem.

Let’s look at the verse in a few different translations and see if we are able to pick up on any more additional meaning.

19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. ESV

19 By your patience possess your souls. NKJV

19 By your [patient] endurance [empowered by the Holy Spirit] you will gain your souls. AMP

Having a few different versions of the scripture helps to paint a more complete picture of what the verse is saying.

So we don’t “win at life” we “win life”, and according to the other versions we will gain our lives and our souls.

The opposite of life is death and if you are not walking in the light then you are walking in darkness.

The bible is very clear that if you are not FOR God, then you are against Him.

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Matthew 12:30

Because we know that we are #teamjesus, we can stop ourselves from being caught up in the ways of the world.

The world will try to drag you down, but it is not to get us down.

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

So there we have it friends, I implore you to stand firm so you can have eternal life!
