Stand Firm Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. James 4:8

What does standing firm have to do with waiting? What does standing firm have to do with patience?

This passage in James is all about being patient in suffering.

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

When we sow seeds it takes time for those seed to take root and grow. This verse reminds me of Galatians 6:9:

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

We tend to think of a harvest as something we will see here on earth, but more than the harvest on earth, there is the harvest in heaven.

The will be a day when the Lord comes and we stand before Him, giving account for our lives, including our decision to stand firm (or give up!)

In the seemingly impossible God makes all things possible.

13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

This is easy to remember now, and much harder to remember in our moments of weakness and despair.

I’ve come up with an acrostic for stand to remind you what happens when you stand firm,  and encourage you to keep standing firm even when you don’t feel like it.

Standing gives us the ability, understanding and perspective to live out God’s will.

I hope this encourages you to be patient in your suffering, and persevere in your standing!
