Stand Firm and Accrue Interest

24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

In order to really understand what this verse is saying, we must explore the context.

18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c] and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

23 I call God as my witness—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

I’m so excited! He doesn’t just stay “stand firm” once, but twice! Let’s look at these verses a little closer:

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

We don’t stand firm in our power, as we don’t have that ability, but it is through God empowering us that we are able to stand firm.

His seal of ownership is the Holy Spirit in us, and that is how He has marked us. One of the ways to tell if the Holy Spirit is in someone is to really examine their life and see what kind of fruit they are yielding.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22

It’s like putting money in a bank account and watching it accrue interest. The money you put in already has value, but the longer money is in the account the more it grows in value. Now in a bank you can’t do anything with that money to make it grow, but in our lives we can do things that grow us spiritually (oh that’s a good idea for a separate post!)

Standing firm is one of those things.

Not only has he deposited the Holy Spirit in us and set us apart to fulfill His purpose, but He also promises us an eternal inheritance.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people Ephesians 1:18

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

Standing firm is having faith for the promise that is yet to come.

And by that promise there is joy to be had, joy to found and joy to be experienced through God’s deposit of the Holy Spirit in You.
