31 Days of Prayer Scripture and Quotes

Love, Peace and Prayer

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Yes we all know and love this verse (at least I do) This is the verse that people remember and rehearse and repeat to other who are going through a difficult time.

Sure in theory, it sounds great, “don’t be worried about a thing, but instead bring every situation before God and He will give you peace about it”

This is so much easier said than done. I’m going to do a #throwback post today because I looked at this verse a few months ago, and the truths I pulled from the verse are truths that we all need to be reminded of again. (note: I wrote this post around election day)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

In light of the presidential election, no doubt many of you are upset that your candidate did not win. As I am writing this it is #electionday2016 and I have no idea who is winning as people are still voting, but I do know, as many people have said that no matter who wins the election, God is still bigger and He is still in control.

This day is a turning point in the history of this country no doubt, but it is a day that has been written long ago by our king. He is not worried or anxious. He is not going to thwart His plan, He IS the plan. This country takes on new leadership, but we stand firm in who our leader is.

Follow the leader was a fun game a kid. You stand behind someone in line and had to follow that person wherever they went.

We will follow this leader that God has given us here on earth, but we know who is King.

The verse of the week is Philippians 4:6-7 and we are going to break it down as what it means to us individual and what it means to us as a nation (One Nation Under God to be exact) Mark 3:24-25

Do not be anxious about anything

That means anything!  He didn’t say “don’t be anxious about big things but little things are okay” and he didn’t say “don’t be anxious about somethings”, he said don’t be anxious about ANYTHING.

Let’s define anything, since we often think it is okay to be anxious about somethings.

According to dictionary.com:

1. any thing whatever; something, no matter what:
2.a thing of any kind.
3.in any degree; to any extent; in any way; at all:
Hmm… That seems to really cover a wide range of things, doesn’t it.
but in every situation
I would say this is the opposite of above, take the 3 definitions and include or replace the word “any” with “every”. In every situation and circumstance (those anythings we are anxious about)
by prayer and petition
According to dictionary.com:
1. a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God.
2. an earnest hope or wish.
1.a formally drawn request, often bearing the names of a number of those making the request, that is addressed to a person or group of persons in authority or power, soliciting some favor, right, mercy, or other benefit:a petition for clemency; a petition for the repeal of an unfair law.

2.a request made for something desired, especially a respectful or humble request, as to a superior or to one of those in authority; supplication or prayer:

a petition for aid; a petition to God for courage and strength.

3.something that is sought by request or entreaty:

to receive one’s full petition.
4.to beg for or request (something).
5.to ask by petition for (something).

with thanksgiving

1.the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors, especially to God.
2.an expression of thanks, especially to God.
3.a public celebration in acknowledgment of divine favor or kindness.
present your requests to God
We can’t just present our to-do list to God without first doing something ourselves. Expressing thanksgiving. In every situation and every circumstance there is something to be thankful for. EVERY. not some. not a few, EVERY.
That means that those situations that create anxiety (or worry) are opportunities to thank God.
worried about election. Thankful we live in a country where we have the privileged to vote.
worried about money. Thankful that we have to ability and right to earn money for work.
worried about what wear. Thankful that we have clothes to wear.
Your turn: What anxious thought(s) are you currently experiencing that you can use to give God thanks?
So we are called to pray and petition with thanksgiving in every situation. Every situation is an opportunity to express gratitude to God. Even if you are just thanking God for creating you, loving you, never leaving you, it is possible in EVERY SITUATION to THANK GOD.
Thanking God is Praising God.
