Today’s post is going to look a little different. I’ve mentioned the prayer study I’m doing before, and one of the exercises is to pray personalized scripture.
I’m going to summarize and personalize John 17 (and I invite you to do the same) and also provide some observations and conclusions. (the best thing about praying personalized scripture is that there is no one way to do it!)
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. (Notice that he starts his prayer in third person, it is not “me” and “you” but it is “father” and “son.”)
Father, with the authority you give me as your daughter with the power of Christ inside of me….
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
glorify yourself through me in the ways you have set aside and set me apart…
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.
In everything I do and everyone that I come across, I pray that your glory and joy shines through me. I do not take the influence you’ve given me lightly, instead I declare that it is your words spoken through me as I fulfill the role that you’ve entrusted me with…
8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
My testimony displays your power in my life. Not only do I speak what your word says, but I use the story you are writing in my life to speak of your faithfulness. Everything I am is because of you, and everything I have is from you…
11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[ your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your son in the world to save me. Please protect those around me with the power of your name and fill me up with your spirit so that I may continue to be you with skin on to the people that you’ve entrusted to me…
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
I am your disciple, you’ve sent me to declare your truth to others with the joy that only you can give. I realize that I am not of this world, you have set me apart for greater things. In my pursuit of fulfilling your purpose for me, I confess I often want the pain and the suffering to go away, when in reality you will use what I am going through for your good and your glory. Thank you that you have not left me alone, and that you protect me from the evil one, I pray that you protect those around me from his ways also. Allow me to stand apart from others, and to boldly profess my faith I pray that as we dig deeper into your word that you use your word to transform our hearts to be able to know, understand and believe the truth…
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Lord thank you for the glory you’ve given me through your son, thank you that you desire unity for all of your children. I pray that instead of being Christians divided in this world, we can be Christians united together with one goal and one cause one reason one purpose and one mission: to spread the good news and let our lives be examples of the living Christ.
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[e] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
The world is having a field day with Christians, especially when we keep talking about prayer in response to all of these tragedies, I again seek your face to fill me with your love, your joy and your peace so that I am truly your living sacrifice. I pray that the world be open to hearing of and from you, and that whoever I am around sees your glory shine through and feels your love. I am able to love others because you have first loved me, and I pray that even the difficult people I am around feel your love and your grace wash over them.
I praise you that you don’t see me as: “Stephanie: a good Jesus girl” instead you see me as: “Jesus in Stephanie form”. I ask these things in your son’s precious name, AMEN.
“God is looking for people to use, and if you can get usable, he will wear you out. The most dangerous prayer you can pray is this: ‘Use me.'” – Rick Warren
Ok friends, your turn! Can you write out your very own prayer for John 17, or at the very least pray it aloud, adding and replacing you and your name when appropriate.
Personalized prayer is powerful friends! until tomorrow! XOXO Stephanie
