I know I left you hanging yesterday so I’m going to jump right in about how God uses people’s prayers to accomplish his purpose.
Full disclosure, the following example is not my own, it from the book/bible study “Live a Praying Life” by Jennifer Kennedy Dean. (I’m leading this study this small group semester and it’s been life-changing so far!)
Let’s see what happens when God has an intercessor to pray His will:
In the case of Israel, God has Moses to pray on behalf of the people (for God to withhold His judgement) (see Exodus 32:7-14) and the result is God hears Moses and does not destroy them.
Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened. Exodus 32:14
Now let’s see what happens when God does not have an intercessor to pray His will:
In the case of Judah, God seeks to execute judgement for the nation, but He does not have an intercessor to pray His will.
“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30
The key words here are, “stand in the gap”. We use these words when we pray of behalf of others. Because God did not have an intercessor to pray His will, Judah received judgement (see Ezekiel 22:23-31)
What does this have to do with the verse of the day?
Today’s prayer verse is 2 Chronicles 7:14:
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
HE IS CALLING US TO PRAY ON BEHALF OF OUR NATION! This means that after events like Las Vegas and the hurricanes we need to pray! We say that prayer isn’t as important as taking action, but prayer is the action! We need to pray so God can release his mercy and grace and execute His will on our nation!
To pray God’s will for our nation, we need to:
- humble ourselves
- pray and seek His face
- turn (repent!) from our wicked ways
“God shapes the world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil.” – Mother Teresa
There is your action step for the day friends! During your next prayer time, humble yourself before God, seek His face and turn away from anything (thoughts, word or deed) that is not from Him. Please say a prayer for our country, the victims, the families of victims, the people of the area, the first responders… whoever God lays on your heart to pray for! (Remember that God is calling us to intercede on behalf of others, so the urge you get to pray for those people should not be ignored!)
Until tomorrow! XOXO
