What to Do When You Worry

Waking up in a moment panic, I turn over to look and see what time it is.

3:30 AM. I just had a very strange and alarming dream about a family member that is very close to me.

Ok, so now what? I’m pretty sure I’m going to be up for awhile after that whopper of a dream. My mind is racing, I’m hoping my dream is not foreshadowing an impending reality. Worry and mild panic start to creep in.

Before it gets out of hand, I start to pray.

This week following the Fervent study, we are tackling the area of family as a vulnerable place where the enemy attacks us.

For many of us, (particularly women) our family is a huge part of our identity. When asked who are you, many of us defer to NOT WHO WE ARE, but THE ROLES WE HAVE.

The thing about these roles, they don’t exist independent of other people. To be a family is to be in relationship with each other. This is one of the reasons that Satan is so bound and determined to attack our family, our marriage and our children.

If he can get us down, he can get other people around us down. He rains on our parade so it will rain on others.

These attacks are not limited to actual events happening (of course dealing with the aftermath of these things is challenging enough by itself) but are most often in the form of worry.

The enemy knows when he has us in a foothold of worry, he can shake and potentially crack even the strongest foundation.

While my family has experienced physical, emotional and spiritual attacks of the enemy, the most pressing attack that I am dealing with personally at the moment are attacks on my mind.

I worry about my dad, who is going down a dangerous path…

I worry about my mom who is still learning what it means to move on…

I worry about about my unborn baby, that it is growing and healthy… (pregnancy worries are their own beast, and can probably be it’s own separate post!)

Of these things that I am worried about, how many of them can I control?

Of the things YOU are worried about, how many of them can YOU control?

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own Matthew 6:34

Matthew 6:33 states, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

By seeking first the kingdom we can remind ourselves that while we are not in control of most things, we serve a God who is.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Luke 12:22-25

Besides just telling us not to worry (which is easier said than done) we are given specific instruction on what to do when were worried:

But praying only when we are anxious or worried is not the only thing we need to do.

We need to renew our mind to protect our thoughts from being intercepted by the enemy.IMG_1363.PNG

How we renew our minds:

  • reading the bible daily.
  • consistent quiet time.
  • living from our full identity in Christ (check out that post HERE)
  • maintaining healthy relationships with accountability.
  • remember who is in control (thankfully, because who of us really wants all of that responsibility anyway?!)

The great thing about renewing our mind is that it doesn’t mean that everything we read or listen to pertains to us right now, BUT when we renew our mind through the above ways, we are given the wisdom to realize that even though something doesn’t pertain to us now doesn’t mean we won’t need remember it later.

In fact the bible is clear to say how remembering scripture helps to renew your mind.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

We need to pray when we are worried from a renewed mind. It is not easy, but it necessary for us to continue to be soldiers of the kingdom. Let the word of God transform your heart and mind so it can transform how you pray.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

Now excuse me while I go take my own advice and renew my mind, through reading, writing and prayer! 🙂

Wonderful ,you are so great Stephine .I have started to use concered not worry. we can not change what is going to happen.Only one knows that GOD makes everything happen in our lifes,good or bad he has his reason for it.We might not agree ,might say why me.One day we will have the answers ,the day GOD shows us .Just believe in him and always pray .Chirst lives in me
