Fruit of Faithfulness Series: Day 27
I left off yesterday saying that our awareness allows us to to action.
Today’s verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
The first part, suggests that temptation is a part of life here on earth. It is a matter of WHEN we will be tempted and not IF. Because we live in a broken world we have that guarantee.
So we know its coming.
How will it be coming?
Recall that Satan is the author of lies and also the accuser, so remember that anything that stirs up chaos, strife, confusion or despair is not from God.
How do the lies from the enemy relate to the temptations we face?
Consider this real example taken again from my “wellness aspirations”.(or more like epic fail attempts at not eating sugar/baked goods)
I am at a party where there are cookies available. Before I went to the party I told myself I am not going to eat any cookies. I am tempted to eat these cookies, because at any given time the following thoughts are entering in my mind.
- everyone else is having a cookie I can have a cookie
- one cookie won’t hurt me
- I deserve a cookie today
- I’ve been so good this week, I can have this cookie now
I know many of you are tired of reading about my weight/eating adventures so let me give you another example:
- Your husband doesn’t seem to appreciate you, but your male coworker is so easy to talk to you and he tells you how great you are and how he appreciates you.
- He listens to be, my husband just doesn’t ever listen to me
- It has been so long since I have had the affection of another man
You get the idea.
These lies allow for temptation to present itself and us to wavier in the sight of said temptation.
but when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
There is always a way out. You walk away from the cookies. You stop going to dinner and drinks with your male coworker. You walk away. You turn off the computer.
God will give you a way out and not allow the enemy to tempt you more that you can stand.
OR WILL HE?
How do you feel when you are overwhelmed or when you feel like there is no other option?
When we are facing temptation God can give us more than we can handle in our own strength because His goal is to bring us closer to Him.
You meant it for harm, but God meant it for good. Genesis 50:20
God is faithful to provide a way out of temptation through our relationship with Him.
That means even where there seems to be only one way out, there is always another option. Even when you think you don’t have a choice, you do!
Sometimes we can’t physically move from temptation but we can always move emotionally. Satan’s words in our minds make us susceptible to sin because of the emotions they stir up.
Stop listening to that record. Stop memorizing the lyrics.
God is faithful to provide a way out when we are tempted. The challenge today is to take the words and thoughts you determined were from the enemy and look for them when there is a tempting situation. Notice when then come up so you can take a firm stand against them. When you are tempted his is faithful to provide you a way out and that could mean physically or that could mean emotionally through prayer, but either way, He is with you in the storm and He is with you in sun.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever. – Psalm 23
